"The Acquired Art of
Teaching Music"
by Phyllis Sdoia-Satz
Teaching is an art,
not just an
occupation or a
profession. The art
of teaching is
acquired. It is not
something we are
born with. It’s not
something we do
until something more
attractive comes
along, and it
certainly is not
something we do
because we can’t do
something else.
When I was a child,
I heard what
probably is the
most negative view
of teaching: “Those
who can, do. Those
who can’t,
teach”. An
instructor should
teach only if he or
she loves teaching.
And, even if he/she
loves to teach,
that, in itself,
does not guarantee
that he or she will
be a GOOD
TEACHER. There are
two main purposes to
this text:
-
To help instructors
become the best that
they can be;
-
To change the view
of students who
still think “those
who can’t, teach”
and to change how
teachers perceive
the their role as
well.
